Using SuperStage on a Mac
Starting with 26H2.8, SuperStage is available for Mac: SuperStageForMac_UE5.8_26H2.8.
- The Mac edition supports Unreal Engine 5.8 only. Other engine versions are currently Windows-only.
- The Mac edition works almost exactly like the Windows edition. Fixtures, beams, DMX, NDI, laser, GDTF / MVR, the Asset Browser, patch tools, and sign-in all work as usual.
- The one thing missing is MA2 in grandMA Link: grandMA2 onPC itself has no Mac version, so on a Mac you can connect to MA3 only.
1. Before You Install
| You need | Notes |
|---|---|
| Computer | A Mac with Apple silicon (M series) |
| Unreal Engine | 5.8, installed through the Epic Games Launcher |
| Xcode | Install it from the App Store, open it once, and accept the license agreement |
| Metal component | Unreal Engine needs it to run on a Mac; see Step 2 below |
2. Installation
1. Add the plugin
Unzip the package and place the whole SuperStage folder in the engine's plugin folder. If the engine is in the default location, that folder is:
/Users/Shared/Epic Games/UE_5.8/Engine/Plugins/Marketplace
2. Install the Metal component
Open Terminal, paste the line below, press Return, and wait for the download to finish:
xcodebuild -downloadComponent MetalToolchain
If the download fails, you can also open Xcode, go to Settings → Components, find Metal Toolchain, and click "Get".
3. Let your Mac open the plugin
By default, macOS blocks files downloaded from the internet. Paste the line below into Terminal and press Return (if you placed the plugin somewhere else, replace the path with the actual location):
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Users/Shared/Epic Games/UE_5.8/Engine/Plugins/Marketplace/SuperStage"
4. Enable the plugin
- Open your UE 5.8 project, check SuperStage under Edit → Plugins, and restart the editor when prompted.
- The first launch takes a while. Please wait until it finishes loading.
- If your Mac asks whether Unreal Editor may access the Local Network, click Allow. Otherwise consoles, NDI, laser, and other network features will not receive any signal.
3. Differences from the Windows Edition
| Item | On a Mac |
|---|---|
| grandMA Link | MA3 only, no MA2. If you need MA2, export files with DMXToMa and import them on a Windows computer or a console |
| Visuals | Almost all effects look the same as on Windows. Macs do not support hardware ray tracing, so the few effects that rely on it look slightly different |
| Network access | The first time, allow Unreal Editor to access the Local Network |
| Sign-in | Use the same account as on Windows. An account can be used on one computer at a time: signing in on the Mac signs you out on Windows, and vice versa |
| Packaging standalone apps | This release covers use inside the editor; packaging standalone Mac apps has not been verified yet |
When you connect to MA3, SuperStage automatically places the fixture libraries in the library folder of grandMA3 onPC for Mac. You do not need to copy them by hand.
4. FAQ
"The module SuperCore could not be loaded" when opening a project The plugin files are usually incomplete or blocked by macOS. Unzip the package again completely, replace the plugin folder, run Installation Step 3 once more, and restart the editor.
"missing Metal Toolchain" The Metal component is not installed yet. Install it as described in Installation Step 2, then reopen the project.
No signal from consoles, NDI, or laser software Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network and make sure Unreal Editor is switched on.
The DMX software runs on the same Mac as SuperStage, and no signal arrives
Set the DMX software's output destination to 127.0.0.1 instead of a broadcast address. Keep SuperStage's local IP at 0.0.0.0.
There is no MA2 in grandMA Link This is expected; the Mac edition does not offer MA2.
I have to sign in again after switching Mac user accounts This is expected. Sign-in is saved per Mac user account, so after switching you need to sign in again.
